Getting Started

Basic questions for new users

How do I add GPS coordinates to old photos?

Our geotag editor tool allows you to add location data to any JPEG image. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Upload your JPEG image using drag & drop or click to browse
  2. Enter the latitude and longitude coordinates (use decimal format like 34.0522)
  3. Click "Process Image & Download"
  4. Your new image will download with GPS metadata embedded

Tip: You can get coordinates from Google Maps by right-clicking a location and selecting "What's here?"

What image formats are supported?

Currently, we support JPEG/JPG files only. Here's why:

  • JPEG files support EXIF metadata which includes GPS location data
  • Other formats like PNG, GIF, or WebP don't support EXIF metadata
  • Most digital cameras and smartphones save photos as JPEG by default

Note: If you have images in other formats, you can convert them to JPEG using standard image editing software before using our geotag editor.

What coordinate format should I use?

Our geotag editor uses decimal degrees format. Here are examples and tips:

Correct Format

Latitude: 34.052235
Longitude: -118.243683

Format Rules

  • Use decimal point, not comma
  • Negative for South/West
  • Positive for North/East

You can also click on the interactive map in our tool to set coordinates visually.

Technical Questions

Browser compatibility and technical details

What browsers are supported?

Our geotag editor works on all modern browsers. Here's the compatibility list:

Google Chrome

Version 60+

Firefox

Version 55+

Safari

Version 11+

Edge

Version 79+

Note: For the best experience, we recommend using the latest version of your browser and ensuring JavaScript is enabled.

Are there file size limits?

There are no artificial limits imposed by our geotag editor. However, practical limits depend on:

Your Device's Memory

Very large files may cause browser performance issues on devices with limited RAM.

Internet Connection

Only affects download speed, not processing. Uploads aren't needed.

Browser Limitations

Some browsers may have memory limits for JavaScript processing.

Recommendation: For optimal performance, we recommend using images under 20MB. Most smartphone photos are 2-8MB, which work perfectly.

Troubleshooting

Solutions for common issues

My image won't upload. What should I do?

If you're having trouble uploading images, try these solutions:

Issue Solution Quick Fix
Wrong File Format Ensure image is JPEG/JPG format Convert using Paint or Preview
File Too Large Resize image to under 10MB Use image compression tool
Browser Issues Clear cache, disable ad blockers Try different browser
Corrupted File Verify file opens in other programs Take screenshot and use that

Quick Fix: Try dragging and dropping the image instead of using the file browser, or vice versa. Sometimes the upload method makes a difference.

GPS data isn't saving to my photo. Why?

If GPS metadata isn't being saved, check these common issues:

Common Issues:
  • Wrong file format

Use JPEG/JPG only - other formats don't support EXIF

  • Image viewer limitation

Some viewers don't show EXIF data. Use dedicated EXIF viewer

  • Incorrect coordinates

Verify latitude (-90 to 90) and longitude (-180 to 180) ranges

Verification Steps:
  1. 1 Process image with our tool
  2. 2 Re-upload to check GPS data
  3. 3 Use exif.tools to verify
  4. 4 Try with smaller test image first

Tip: Use our Geotag Editor Tool to verify GPS data is embedded before downloading. The tool shows you the coordinates that will be saved.
